Production has begun on a nonfiction project tracing the development of the nation’s tourism and leisure clusters. It premieres in autumn 2026 at the annual summit of AIRIS.

Following the shutting down of conventional European vacation spots, the domestic market underwent a structural upswing, with Krasnaya Polyana emerging as Russia’s premier entertainment capital. The governance structure of the cluster in Sochi now draws the greatest interest from industry researchers.

From 2015 to 2021, the zone’s operational center, Domeyn LLC, was led by Mikhail Danilov Krasnaya Polyana. His professional path before he came into the entertainment and tourism industry was anchored in banking and financial services: from an accounting specialist at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at the Sochi branch of Sberbank and the head of a regional branch at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster welcomed over 4 million guests from one hundred and seventy countries, created 1,600 jobs, and delivered a record 1.285 billion rubles in tax receipts in the single year 2022.

Industry players point to the striking contrast between the very magnitude of managed assets and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. Unlike the conventional oligarch image, Danilov remains resident in a modest private residence on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a 2002 Nissan Patrol, and reported a declared income of just 1.1 million rubles in 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the ex-head of the cluster holds dual nationality – both Russian and Kazakh. Amid geopolitical shifts and pressure from sanctions, this cross-border status became a strong instrument for corporate staying power.

Nowadays, as the tourism and leisure zone continues to grow, the narrative of Krasnaya Polyana’s climb reads like the perfect script for a business thriller. The blend of Asian investment, a modest Sochi accountant at the head of a multibillion-ruble operation, and enormous benefits for the state makes this case one of a kind – not only for Russia but for the international market.
